Gandhi to the Knas: A monologue

A 'No' uttered from the deepest conviction is better than a 'Yes' merely uttered to please, or worse, to avoid trouble.
Mohandas Gandhi

A coward is incapable of exhibiting love; it is the prerogative of the brave.
Mohandas Gandhi

A man is but the product of his thoughts; what he thinks, he becomes.
Mohandas Gandhi

A religion that takes no account of practical affairs and does not help to solve them is no religion.
Mohandas Gandhi

An error does not become truth by reason of multiplied propagation, nor does truth become error because nobody sees it.
Mohandas Gandhi

As human beings, our greatness lies not so much in being able to remake the world - that is the myth of the atomic age - as in being able to remake ourselves.
Mohandas Gandhi

Be the change that you want to see in the world.
Mohandas Gandhi

Faith... must be enforced by reason... when faith becomes blind it dies.
Mohandas Gandhi

Fear has its use but cowardice has none.
Mohandas Gandhi

First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.
Mohandas Gandhi

Freedom is not worth having if it does not connote freedom to err.
Mohandas Gandhi

Gentleness, self-sacrifice and generosity are the exclusive possession of no one race or religion.
Mohandas Gandhi

I am prepared to die, but there is no cause for which I am prepared to kill.
Mohandas Gandhi

In matters of conscience, the law of the majority has no place.
Mohandas Gandhi

In prayer it is better to have a heart without words than words without a heart.
Mohandas Gandhi

It has always been a mystery to me how men can feel themselves honoured by the humiliation of their fellow beings.
Mohandas Gandhi

It is easy enough to be friendly to one's friends. But to befriend the one who regards himself as your enemy is the quintessence of true religion. The other is mere business.
Mohandas Gandhi

Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.
Mohandas Gandhi

No culture can live if it attempts to be exclusive.
Mohandas Gandhi

The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.
Mohandas Gandhi

The only tyrant I accept in this world is the still voice within.
Mohandas Gandhi

There are people in the world so hungry, that God cannot appear to them except in the form of bread.
Mohandas Gandhi

There is no principle worth the name if it is not wholly good.
Mohandas Gandhi

Those who know how to think need no teachers.
Mohandas Gandhi

Those who say religion has nothing to do with politics do not know what religion is.
Mohandas Gandhi

To believe in something, and not to live it, is dishonest.
Mohandas Gandhi

To give pleasure to a single heart by a single act is better than a thousand heads bowing in prayer.
Mohandas Gandhi

Truth is by nature self-evident. As soon as you remove the cobwebs of ignorance that surround it, it shines clear.
Mohandas Gandhi

Truth never damages a cause that is just.
Mohandas Gandhi

What do I think of Western civilization? I think it would be a very good idea.
Mohandas Gandhi

You can chain me, you can torture me, you can even destroy this body, but you will never imprison my mind.
Mohandas Gandhi

You don't have to burn books to destroy a culture. Just get people to stop reading them.

The oil-laden Gulf waters; the blood-spilled White House

Et tu, Brute!
Those three words immortalize the ultimate in human betrayal.
Shakespeare most poignantly captured the anguish of betrayal Caesar must have felt as he lay bleeding from the stab wounds inflicted on him by his Senate members. As he looked up, gasping for air, his saw his closest friend Brutus with a blood-drenched dagger in his hands. Brutus was among those who stabbed him. "You too, Brutus!" More a statement than a question. From Julius Caesar.

This phrase is a constant reenactment in peoples' lives. Among parents; among siblings; among friends; among lovers; among business partners and workplace colleagues. This is a deplorable human trait. A trait that might as well have echoed from the Oval Office as Obama was betrayed by his American political counterparts from the Republican Party.

Republican Congressman Joe Barton and Republican Congresswoman Michele Bachmann, in effect, stabbed the American people when they betrayed Obama, spilling American blood into the oil-laded waters of the Gulf of Mexico. These characters and their party colleagues and their Tea Party buffoon friends have chosen to play the Nero as Louisiana burns.

British Petroleum has caused the biggest natural disaster in American history, not so much from a technological failure as much as it is from excessive greed that saw cost-cutting, circumventing the conventional wisdom of necessarily incorporating the essential, preventive and precautionary safety measures. A saving that is the fool's measure of being penny wise and pound foolish. The fragile eco-system of the coastline of Louisiana is irreparably damaged. The wildlife of the Louisiana marsh lands is dead and dying. The lives of families that lived for generations from the bounty of the ocean are now facing the imminent and real threat of seeing their livelihoods literally collapse and go up in flames along with the fate of the oil rig that exploded. It is not just Louisiana anymore. The oil slick and the tar-balls are being carried by the underwater currents to the coast of Florida, and eventually, perhaps to reach as far as the continent of Europe.

Obama willed BP into setting up an escrow fund for $20 billion to sustain the lives of the helpless Gulf residents. This is America's ecological 9/11. Unlike the Twin Towers of Manhattan, the collapse of the coastline of Lousiana is not restricted to its immediate vicinity. It may take generations to overcome the ills of what is going on in that region from the still gushing oil well over one mile below the ocean surface. The consequences of the impact on the marine life in these waters is anybody's guess.

Yet, two Republican members of the Congress as mentioned above, and a few Republican apologists in the mold of Ben Steiner, did not bat an eyelid when they challenged the "constitutionality" of Obama's punitive action taken against BP!

I ask you Republican Judases, what "constitutionality" did you go by when you lit the fires of the American Revolution from the ambers of the Boston Tea Party against your Queen across the pond? If the clarion call of "no taxation without representation" sounded like the rising tide of the bold, indefatigable American spirit, what part of the corporate-greed-devouring-ordinary-American-lives with no-Wall-Street-representation is eluding you now? Have you learnt nothing from the sub-prime mortgage meltdown of your casinos that passed off as some hallowed financial institutions with greedy thugs at the helms that Main Street, in turn, had to bail out?

Constitutions are made to right what is wrong. It is not delivered on two tablets from some mountain top by a deranged Moses with auditory hallucinations and God-complex contrary to what your obtuse Republican minds can best grasp. Your Creationism mantra yeilds a far superior scan of your atrophied brain than the latest MRI technology can.

You betrayed every single American on Main Street when you chose to become BP's defense attorneys. You betrayed the American people when your Neo-con friends from the previous two terms drained America to its financial ruin in pursuit of your neurotic New World Order wet dreams.

The Americans had just started to scramble onto their two feet from the financial sub-prime blows you wreaked out from under the silken sheets of your foreplay with your corporate masters, when they took another hard one to their heads. BP.

And you say it is "unconstitutional" to hold BP's feet to the fire?

And, you have the gumption to say that Obama did not do enough?

You are griping over Obama's alleged delayed acceptance of the Dutch and Norwegian assistance? Aren't they there now and making no difference whatsoever? Sure, we understand your ploy: the Dutch and the Norwegians would have provided enough distraction to shift the blame 3-ways from BP. This menage a trois is one game of seduction that the Americans won't fall for.

America: who needs bin-Laden when you have Republicans to contend with?

And you can only ask: Et tu, Barton?

Nip/Tuck : The Vatican episode!

Nip/Tuck, as you may know, is a TV series based on the lives of people undergoing plastic reconstructive surgery and that of its practitioners. Plastic surgery, for example, on burn-victims is an indisputably desirable benefit realized through the marvel of medical science. But such surgery on the process of aging is not even fit for being an exhibit in Madame Tussauds Wax Museum! Because, a waxed live-being is almost a zombie! And, this is Vatican.

When aging actors try to fit into roles meant for youth, it becomes a sight as disconcerting as the oppositional defiance exhibited by the belly flab against the restrictions of their skinny jeans! This is why there is a time to be young and there is a time to act one's age. CNN's septuagenarian Larry King does have a penchant for younger women. The fact that it is his choice and he can afford it, is hardly the point. The "optics" of it has never been sexy. Even Playboy's Hugh Hefner - that mercurial messenger of sexual liberation - is well past the point of passing the baton before his ideological revolution takes on the aura of the rambling, incoherent American Tea Party!

Vatican, The Sequel - since its sexual abuse debacle - is showing an urgency to get grooving with the young and the hip as a way of rebuilding its image. First it was the 180 degree Galileo-turn-around about the once-despised Beatle, John Lennon. Lennon is honourable now! And lately, it is Vatican's appreciation of the 1980 Hollywood classic, The Blues Brothers. What is troubling are its pronouncements: "This is a memorable film, and, judging by the facts, a Catholic one". Why Catholic? Because the storyline involves the Blues Brothers - Jake and Elwood - being on a "mission from God" to raise money to pay a back tax bill for an orphanage (Toronto Star, June 18th). The humour-challenged Vatican totally misses the point! No surprise.

My questions, then:

1) After the sexual abuse disaster, should Vatican even be allowed to utter the word "orphanage"? Is it trying to find the back-door to another pubescent group via the Hollywood Boulevard?! Vatican is emblematic of the nightmare that many of these ghoulish caverns became for its residents: why is it then so giddy about the mere fiction of saving an orphanage? Doesn't it sound as eerily repulsive as a pedophile's enthusiasm over the financial bail-out of a children's daycare center? Vatican does not get it: does it?!

2) Since when is a good humanitarian act a Catholic exclusive? Then, would Bono's (U2) African debt relief campaign and Bob Geldof's Ethiopian famine relief concert (Band Aid),and the Beatle George Harrison's collaboration with Ravi Shanker for famine relief in Bangladesh be less meritorious because they are non-Catholic? Even Hamas, despite its notoriety, does more charity work for its displaced fellow-Palestinians than Vatican ever will for its own. For all its self-entitled claims, Vatican not only failed its own Rwandan faithfuls, but was also treacherously complicit in their deaths, abetting the notorious Rwandan genocide! How Catholic is this?!? And, for the Knas, closer to home is Abhaya. And, need I mention Njaarackal?

3) Oh, and then (continuing with the Blues Brothers) Vatican could not resist its favourite indulgence - sex: Vatican makes special mention of Elwood passing up on a chance for a one-night stand with a woman (played by the famous English model Twiggy) "to fulfill the mission". What has sex got to do with humanitarian acts?!!

My article The Applegate of All Things Sexual (Sneha Sandesham, May 2010) did cite this very concern: as I wrote, you may have just returned from an arduous relief mission in Haiti, risking your own health and life, but if you did not pull an "Elwood", or you are of Elton John's sexual orientation - despite the millions he fundraises for all kinds of charitable causes - you are just not that good enough!

Nip/Tuck all you want Vatican, but without a substantive transformation of your "soul" which, if not already sold to the proverbial devil, you are nothing but an Egyptian mummy from ancient times attempting to do a John Travolta dance-step to the BeeGees' Saturday Night Fever disco tracks in the name of currency! Do you have any idea how ridiculous you look?!

You appear grotesque because your attempts at rehabilitation are pretentious and fake (much like the plastic surgeries). Nothing short of a seismic shift and a total destruction of your entity can save you. And this will not be unlike the temple that needed to be rebuilt from ground up as parabolized in the Bible, a book you are so fond of quoting but without ever understanding even a single word in it!

Nip/Tuck all your lies Vatican, and shine the light on Truth. This Truth, if not burdened by the opacity of your cataracts, you will see, is hardly of Catholic proprietary!

The stain of Honour Killings and that of Urinary Incontinence

Clearly, both stink!
Both dribble as well: one, a component of the excretory system, and the other, of the atrophied intelligence quotient, a.k.a., idiocy.

16-year old Aqsa Parvez "died in an apotheosis of anger, strangled by her father (60) and older brother (29) in her bedroom, a room in the crowded home for which she was not allowed to have a door under her father's stifling control" (National Post, Toronto, June 16, 2010). Both pleaded guilty to her murder in what prosecutors say was "gender-based crime motivated by patriarchal concepts of honour and shame".

Aqsa was killed in the early morning of December 10, 2007. Mr. Parvez woke his wife declaring: "My community will say you have not been able to control your daughter. This is my insult. She is making me naked".

Did I hear that he killed his daughter for the reason of his own inadequacies when nude, or was it because his wife failed where he succeded by killing?!

Aqsa was killed for embracing Western culture. Parvez brought Pakistan to Toronto, Canada. The social and the dress code restrictions etc. he attempted to impose on this spirited 16-year old experiencing a moment of freedom enjoyed by all Canadians saw her take refuge at a shelter, and requiring the mediation of the Children's Aid Society and the India Rainbow Services. Mr. Pervez would not relent.

Knas won't kill, but the community does play the "honour" angle: it excommunicates! Perhaps this is our closed-fist handshake confirming our solidatiry with our brethren who take inspiration from the same well of religiosity that flows out of desert terrains of the Middle East.

Both follow the Stink Principle! And both leave a repulsive stain (on their respective communities)!

Man made God, and then God made man!

It stupefies me to no end that someone can subscribe to creationism at all! Knowing that Christianity and Islam have Middle Eastern origins, it is not difficult to understand why their storylines portray women as an after-thought - a (mere)secondary companion to the first-come Adam - and as a temptress who is faulted for all the evil that has come upon mankind! One cannot ascribe such simplistic, Toyota-sticky-pedal-defective-product kind of a scenario to the creation (of woman) by a God who is, at the same time, credited with the making of an extremely complex universe! For all His genius, He must also be dyslexic given the amount of inconsistencies and contradictions in the Bible, and without doubt, of a developmental age no more than that of a child in Erikson's Concrete stage of thinking/rationalization as revealed by His Quranic utterances! I see a petulant, angry, sexually repressed man - the very qualities embodied by the modern day Mullahs and some of those grumpy old men in Vatican - behind these stories. Yet, man in his God-complex, resorted to what Freud described as the 'defense mechanism' of projection: that is, blaming somebody else for that which is undesirable in oneself. So, here we have 'God' as a scapegoat for man's follies, and yet to cover his own tracks, he creates this notion of 'Will' affixed to a perfect God for the imperfections that emanate from His magnificient creations and creatures!

Now we know the reason for the 'God-complex' of physicians! They are one up on their silly fellowmen!
72 is a number. Yet it is more than a number.

- the Great Rhombicuboctahedron is an Archimediean Solid with 72 edges.
- the Chemical Element Hafnium has an atomic number of 72.
- the 72 names of God in Kabbalistic tradition.
- the 72 skulls on the necklace of Kali
- the 72 assassins of the dark god Set (in Egyptian mythology)
- 5 x 72 = the Gematrian Wheel = a complete circle.
- the 72 disciples sent by Jesus.
- the 72 confusing languages at the Tower of Babel.
- the 72 old men of Synagogue according to Zohar.
- the 72 disciples of Confucious.
- the 72 Houris (virgins) in Islam.
- the 72 families that arrived Kundangaloor with Knai Thomman.
See, even the Knas are not spared!

Now you know why this blogspot is named 72. Appearances and sound bites can be deceiving. We may never learn the whole truth about many things, but the onus is, nonetheless, on us to be prudently discriminating of what comes our way by way of information. This is intelligent evaluation and consumption of data.

Welcome to 72 where mere appearances won't count! I shall draw inspiration from Albert Einstein's words: "We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them".
